Bold Women’s Voices, Stronger Democracy: Kwale County Rising
In Kwale County, a new chapter is unfolding — one where women’s voices are no longer sidelined but are shaping the future of democracy. Through the Bold Women’s Voices, Stronger Democracy project, Peace Tree Network (PTN), with support from the Zivik Funding Program, is working hand-in-hand with young women, community leaders, local authorities, and grassroots organisations to transform political participation and governance.
✨ A Vision for Change
Peace Tree Network envisions a future where women in Kwale County achieve equitable representation and participation in political leadership and decision-making. This vision is rooted in PTN’s mission: to nurture peace, justice, and inclusive governance by empowering communities to lead transformative change. Guided by its vision of a society where dignity, equality, and solidarity thrive, PTN is building pathways for women to step into leadership with courage and resilience.
🌱 Impacts Already Taking Root
- Increased Female Representation: More young women are preparing to run for office and join political groups.
- Cultural Shift: Patriarchal norms are being challenged, with communities beginning to value women’s leadership.
- Enhanced Political Safety: Gender-based violence and harassment are being addressed through advocacy and protective measures.
- Supportive Infrastructure: Mentorship, legal aid, and financial resources are being established to sustain women leaders.
- Policy Reforms: Local authorities are engaging with gender-responsive policies and recommendations to strengthen women’s participation.
📌 Milestones on the Journey
- Young Women Leaders: 400 women under 30 are being trained, with at least 30 already leading community dialogues and 20 stepping into new leadership roles.
- Community Leaders: 70% of participating leaders now publicly endorse women’s political involvement, with several collaborating directly with women’s groups.
- Local Authorities: Policy recommendations have been submitted, and civic education events increasingly include women’s voices.
- CBOs and Youth Organisations: Over half of the 20 partner organisations have launched initiatives to reduce gender discrimination and promote young women’s leadership.
🗣 Voices of Change
Majaliwa Juma, Likoni: “Before this training, I thought politics was for others. Now I know my rights, and I use social media to speak about issues in Kwale. I feel seen, and I feel powerful.”
Fatuma Athuman, Kwale: “TikTok was just fun for me, but Peace Tree Network showed me it can be a tool for advocacy. Now my videos carry messages about equality and leadership — and people are listening.”
Grace Wanjiru, Kijiji: “Running for office was not easy. Elders laughed at me, but I stood firm. The support I got here reminded me that leadership has no gender. My community is beginning to see that too.”
Community Leader, Kinondo: “We used to think women should stay silent in politics. After these dialogues, I now encourage my daughters and sisters to speak up. It is our duty to support them.”
Youth Organisation Member, Kombani: “Our Chemichemi Safi Initiative is more than water. It is about dignity, safety, and showing that young women can lead projects that change lives.”
🤝 Collaboration at the Core
This project thrives on collaboration. PTN works alongside:
- Community-Based Organisations (CBOs) that integrate gender-sensitive approaches and create safe spaces for survivors of GBV.
- Local Authorities and Policymakers who are adopting gender-responsive reforms and supporting women candidates.
- Community Leaders who are shifting attitudes and opening doors for women’s participation.
- Young Women who are stepping boldly into leadership roles, driving awareness campaigns, and reshaping governance.
With the support of the Zivik Funding Program, these collaborations are strengthened, ensuring that grassroots voices in Kwale County are amplified and connected to national and global movements for democracy and equality.
Contribution to Peace and Democracy
By enhancing women’s political participation, the project contributes to:
- Crisis Prevention: Reducing exclusion and grievances that fuel conflict.
- Stabilisation: Promoting inclusive governance and empowering local leadership.
- Peacebuilding: Strengthening community resilience through dialogue and reducing structural inequalities.
- Democratisation: Embedding gender equality and youth inclusion into governance systems, aligned with UNSCR 1325 and 2250.
🌟 The Road Ahead
As Kwale County moves forward, the Bold Women’s Voices, Stronger Democracy project is more than a program — it is a movement. It is about transforming fear into courage, silence into voice, and exclusion into participation. With Peace Tree Network’s mission and vision guiding the way, and with strong collaborations supported by the Zivik Funding Program, Kwale is becoming a beacon of inclusive democracy in Kenya.
